da- and wo- compounds

For things, combine da(r)- or wo(r)- with the preposition: „Wofür interessierst du dich? – Für Physik. Ich interessiere mich schon lange dafür.“ (r is added before a vowel: dar-auf, wor-über)

For people, keep preposition + pronoun: „Auf wen wartest du? – Auf meinen Bruder. Ich warte auf ihn.“

A da-compound can announce a whole clause: „Ich freue mich darauf, dass das Semester beginnt.“ / „Denk daran, das Formular zu unterschreiben.“

Common mistakes

  • Wrong: Ich interessiere mich über Politik.

Correct: Ich interessiere mich für Politik.

    „sich interessieren“ takes „für“.

  • Wrong: Auf was wartest du?

    Correct: Worauf wartest du?

Standard written German uses wo(r)- + preposition for things.
