Help and FAQ
How German Prep works, where your data lives and how every result is calculated.
Getting started
Does German Prep cost anything?
No. Every feature that exists today is free and works without an account. A Premium plan is planned, but no price has been announced and nothing can be bought yet.
Where should I start?
Take the placement test to get an indicative level, then open the lessons of the recommended level. If you have a deadline, create a study plan — it turns your goal into weekly tasks.
Which levels are covered?
Lessons, questions and listening exercises cover A1 to C1. There is no C2 material yet.
Your data
Where is my progress saved?
In your browser's local storage on this device. German Prep has no server database, so nothing you do here is uploaded. Clearing your browser data deletes your progress.
Can I use my progress on another device?
Yes: open Account, export a backup file and import it on the other device. The file contains only German Prep data and is checked when you import it.
How do I delete my data?
Open Account and choose “Delete all data”. Everything German Prep stored in this browser is removed.
Accounts and demo mode
Why is there no real sign-up?
Secure accounts need a server, a database and an authentication provider, which German Prep does not run yet. Until then, a local profile stores your name and goal in this browser — without e-mail or password.
What are the advisor and admin demos?
They show how advisors and admins will work, using fictional sample people. Changes are stored only in your browser. The role switch is not a secure login: hiding a page in the browser is not access control, so the demos contain no real data.
How will real permissions work?
Students see only their own data, advisors only the students assigned to them and the documents those students shared, and admins manage users and content but cannot open private documents. These rules are already implemented and tested as shared functions; with a backend they are enforced on the server and by row-level security in the database.
Results and scoring
How does the placement test decide my level?
Questions come in blocks of 8 per level. With at least 5 correct answers you pass a block and the test moves up; otherwise it moves down. It stops at the boundary between a passed and a failed block. If you answer at least 3 questions of the next level correctly, the result says you are approaching it. It measures grammar, vocabulary and reading only.
How are weak areas identified?
German Prep looks at your last 300 answers. A skill needs at least 8 answers and a topic at least 5 answers before it is judged. Below 60 % accuracy (partial credit included) it is shown as a weak area; with less evidence it is listed as “not enough evidence”.
Are the exam calculators official?
No. They apply the rules published in the official documents linked on each exam page and are labelled “official rules”, “partly modelled” or “illustrative”. Only the exam provider issues results, and the conversion of raw answers into points is often not public.
Does the writing assistant use AI?
No. It is a set of transparent rules that runs in your browser: it counts words and sentences, finds connectors and useful phrases, flags common errors and profiles your vocabulary. It cannot judge content or coherence like a teacher.
How does the vocabulary review schedule work?
Cards move through five Leitner boxes. A card you know moves up one box; a card you forget goes back to box 1. The boxes are reviewed after 1, 2, 4, 8, 16 days.
Listening recordings
Who speaks in the recordings?
The scripts are written by German Prep and spoken by open-source speech synthesis with voices trained on CC0-licensed recordings. Each recording is checked automatically with offline speech recognition; a human pronunciation review is still pending and marked on every page.
Accessibility
Can I use German Prep with a keyboard or screen reader?
Yes. All exercises work with the keyboard, German text is marked as German for screen readers, feedback is announced, and the site supports light and dark themes and reduced motion. Please report any barrier you find.
