The passive voice

Focus on the action instead of the person: „werden“ + past participle.

The passive is formed with werden + past participle. It is common in instructions, news and academic texts because the action matters more than the person.

Active: „Die Universität baut eine neue Bibliothek.“ → Passive: „Eine neue Bibliothek wird (von der Universität) gebaut.“

  • In der Mensa wird jeden Tag frisch gekocht.

    Fresh food is cooked in the canteen every day.

  • Die Ergebnisse wurden gestern veröffentlicht.

    The results were published yesterday.

  • Die Unterlagen müssen bis Freitag eingereicht werden.

    The documents must be submitted by Friday.

Common mistakes

  • Wrong: Das Haus ist gebaut von 1910.

    Correct: Das Haus wurde 1910 gebaut.

    The process passive uses „werden“.

  • Wrong: Die E-Mail ist geschrieben geworden.

    Correct: Die E-Mail ist geschrieben worden.

    Perfect passive uses „worden“.
