Konjunktiv IIAbout 30 min5 practice questions

In this lesson you will

  • Make polite requests with „könnten“ and „würden“
  • Express wishes and unreal conditions
  • Give advice with „sollte“
Frequent forms
Personwürdehättewärekönnte
ichwürdehättewärekönnte
duwürdesthättestwärstkönntest
er / sie / eswürdehättewärekönnte
wirwürdenhättenwärenkönnten
ihrwürdethättetwärtkönntet
sie / Siewürdenhättenwärenkönnten

Most verbs use würde + infinitive: „Ich würde gern im Ausland studieren.“ With „haben“, „sein“ and the modal verbs, use the one-word forms: „hätte, wäre, könnte, müsste, sollte, dürfte“.

Unreal conditions: „Wenn ich mehr Zeit hätte, würde ich einen Sprachkurs machen.“ — Polite requests: „Könnten Sie mir bitte helfen?“ — Advice: „Du solltest dich früh bewerben.“

Examples

  • Ich hätte gern einen Termin in der Studienberatung.

I would like an appointment with student advice.

  • Wenn ich du wäre, würde ich das Angebot annehmen.

If I were you, I would accept the offer.

  • Würden Sie mir die Unterlagen bitte per E-Mail schicken?

Would you please send me the documents by e-mail?

Common mistakes

  • Wrong: Wenn ich Zeit habe, würde ich kommen.

Correct: Wenn ich Zeit hätte, würde ich kommen.

An unreal condition needs Konjunktiv II in both clauses.

  • Wrong: Ich würde haben mehr Geld.

    Correct: Ich hätte mehr Geld.

Use „hätte“ instead of „würde haben“.
