InfinitivsätzeAbout 25 min5 practice questions

In this lesson you will

  • Use zu + infinitive after verbs, adjectives and nouns
  • Place „zu“ correctly with separable verbs
  • Choose between „um … zu“ (same subject) and „damit“ (different subjects)

Many verbs, adjectives and nouns are followed by zu + infinitive at the end of the clause: „Ich versuche, jeden Tag Vokabeln zu lernen.“ — „Es ist wichtig, pünktlich zu sein.“ — „Ich habe keine Lust, heute zu kochen.“

With separable verbs, „zu“ goes between the prefix and the verb: „anrufen → anzurufen“, „aufstehen → aufzustehen“.

um … zu expresses a purpose when both parts have the same subject: „Ich spare, um in Deutschland zu studieren.“ If the subjects are different, use damit: „Ich erkläre es dir, damit du es verstehst.“
