The dative case

When do you need the dative?

1. For the indirect object (the person who receives something): „Ich gebe dem Lehrer das Buch.“

2. After dative verbs such as „helfen, danken, gefallen, gehören, schmecken, antworten, gratulieren“: „Das Essen schmeckt mir.“

3. After the prepositions aus, bei, mit, nach, seit, von, zu (and „gegenüber“): „Ich fahre mit dem Bus zur Uni.“ (zu + der = zur, zu + dem = zum, bei + dem = beim, von + dem = vom)

  • Ich wohne seit einem Jahr bei meiner Tante.

    I have been living with my aunt for a year.

  • Nach dem Kurs gehen wir zum Bahnhof.

    After the course we go to the station.

Common mistakes

  • Wrong: Ich helfe dich.

    Correct: Ich helfe dir.

    „helfen“ takes the dative.

  • Wrong: Ich fahre mit der Bus.

    Correct: Ich fahre mit dem Bus.

    „der Bus“ is masculine: dative „dem“.
