Extended participle attributes
Long noun phrases with Partizip I and II — common in academic texts and in reading exams.
In this lesson you will
- Distinguish Partizip I (active, ongoing) and Partizip II (completed or passive)
- Transform participle attributes into relative clauses
- Understand the gerundive „zu + Partizip I“
| Form | Meaning | Example → relative clause |
|---|---|---|
| Partizip I (-end) | active, simultaneous | die steigenden Kosten → die Kosten, die steigen |
| Partizip II | passive or completed | die veröffentlichte Studie → die Studie, die veröffentlicht wurde |
| Partizip II (intransitive with sein) | completed (active) | die gestiegenen Kosten → die Kosten, die gestiegen sind |
| zu + Partizip I (Gerundiv) | necessity / possibility | die zu lösende Aufgabe → die Aufgabe, die gelöst werden muss |
The attribute can be extended with everything that belongs to the verb. These words stand between the article and the participle: „die in den letzten zehn Jahren stark gestiegenen Studierendenzahlen“ = „die Studierendenzahlen, die in den letzten zehn Jahren stark gestiegen sind“.
Reading strategy: find the article (die), jump to the noun (Studierendenzahlen), then read the participle (gestiegenen) and finally the words in between.
