  • Replace Konjunktiv I with Konjunktiv II when the forms are identical to the indicative
  • Report past statements
Konjunktiv I – third person singular
InfinitiveKonjunktiv IExample

Konjunktiv I is formed from the infinitive stem + endings (er komme, er habe). It is mainly used in the third person singular, because many other forms look like the indicative.

If Konjunktiv I is identical to the indicative, use Konjunktiv II: „Die Studierenden sagen, sie haben zu wenig Zeit“ (indicative form) → „…, sie hätten zu wenig Zeit.“

Past events: Konjunktiv I of haben/sein + participle: „Er sagt, er habe die Arbeit pünktlich abgegeben.“ / „Sie sagt, sie sei gestern angekommen.“
