In this lesson you will
- Form the simple past of regular verbs with -te
- Recognise frequent irregular forms (ging, kam, sah, fand …)
| Person | machen | gehen | sein | haben |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| ich | machte | ging | war | hatte |
| du | machtest | gingst | warst | hattest |
| er / sie / es | machte | ging | war | hatte |
| wir | machten | gingen | waren | hatten |
| ihr | machtet | gingt | wart | hattet |
| sie / Sie | machten | gingen | waren | hatten |
In speech, most verbs use the perfect tense. In writing — and for „sein“, „haben“ and the modal verbs also in speech — the simple past is normal: „Ich war gestern in der Bibliothek, aber ich konnte das Buch nicht finden.“
Note: ich and er/sie/es have the same form and no extra ending in the simple past („ich ging“, „er ging“).
| Infinitive | Simple past | Participle |
|---|---|---|
| kommen | kam | gekommen |
| sehen | sah | gesehen |
| finden | fand | gefunden |
| geben | gab | gegeben |
| nehmen | nahm | genommen |
| schreiben | schrieb | geschrieben |
| denken | dachte | gedacht |
| wissen | wusste | gewusst |
