Connectors and word order: deshalb, trotzdem, obwohl
Each connector type has its own word order. Learn to link ideas in writing and speaking.
In this lesson you will
- Distinguish connectors in position 0, position 1 and subordinating connectors
- Express consequence (deshalb) and concession (trotzdem, obwohl)
| Type | Examples | Word order |
|---|---|---|
| Position 0 | und, aber, oder, denn, sondern | „…, denn ich habe keine Zeit.“ (normal order) |
| Position 1 (adverbial) | deshalb, trotzdem, außerdem, dann, allerdings | „Deshalb komme ich später.“ (verb directly after) |
| Subordinating | weil, obwohl, wenn, dass, damit, nachdem | „…, obwohl ich keine Zeit habe.“ (verb at the end) |
Same idea, three structures: „Ich bin müde, denn ich habe schlecht geschlafen.“ — „Ich habe schlecht geschlafen. Deshalb bin ich müde.“ — „Ich bin müde, weil ich schlecht geschlafen habe.“
Concession: „Es regnet. Trotzdem gehen wir spazieren.“ = „Obwohl es regnet, gehen wir spazieren.“
Common mistakes
Wrong: Deshalb ich komme später.
Correct: Deshalb komme ich später.
„deshalb“ takes position 1, so the verb follows immediately.
Wrong: Obwohl es regnet, wir gehen spazieren.
Correct: Obwohl es regnet, gehen wir spazieren.
The main clause after a subordinate clause starts with the verb.
