NebensätzeAbout 25 min3 practice questions

In this lesson you will

  • Give reasons with „weil“ and report with „dass“
  • Express conditions with „wenn“ and indirect yes/no questions with „ob“
  • Start a sentence with a subordinate clause

Verb at the end

Subordinating conjunctions send the conjugated verb to the end of their clause, and a comma separates the clauses: „Ich bleibe zu Hause, weil ich krank bin.“

If there are two verbs, the conjugated one comes last: „…, weil ich arbeiten muss.“ / „…, weil ich lange gearbeitet habe.“

If the subordinate clause comes first, it takes position 1 and the main clause starts with the verb: „Wenn ich Zeit habe, komme ich mit.“

Four common conjunctions

Correct: …, weil ich keine Zeit habe.

After „weil“ the verb goes to the end.

  • Wrong: Wenn ich Zeit habe, ich komme.

Correct: Wenn ich Zeit habe, komme ich.

After a subordinate clause in position 1, the main clause begins with the verb.
