Conjugate regular verbs and the two most important irregular verbs.

PräsensAbout 25 min5 practice questions

In this lesson you will

  • Add the correct ending for each person (ich, du, er/sie/es …)
  • Use „sein“ and „haben“ in all persons
  • Recognise verbs that change their stem vowel in the du and er/sie/es forms

Stem + ending

Most German verbs end in -en in the infinitive („lernen“, „wohnen“). Remove -en to get the stem („lern-“) and add an ending that matches the subject.

„Sie“ with a capital S is the formal „you“. It always takes the same form as „sie“ (they): „Sie lernen“.

Verbs that change their vowel

Some common verbs change their stem vowel, but only in the du and er/sie/es forms: e → i („sprechen“ → „du sprichst“, „er spricht“), e → ie („lesen“ → „du liest“, „sie liest“) and a → ä („fahren“ → „du fährst“, „er fährt“).

Examples

  • Ich lerne seit drei Monaten Deutsch.

I have been learning German for three months.

  • Du arbeitest in einem Café, oder?

You work in a café, don't you?

  • Sie wohnt in Wien und studiert Medizin.

  • Wir sind neu hier.

    We are new here.

  • Habt ihr morgen Zeit?

Do you (plural) have time tomorrow?

  • Er spricht drei Sprachen.

    He speaks three languages.

Common mistakes

  • Wrong: Du lernt Deutsch.

    Correct: Du lernst Deutsch.

The du form ends in -st.

  • Wrong: Er haben ein Auto.

    Correct: Er hat ein Auto.

    „haben“ is irregular: er/sie/es hat.

  • Wrong: Ich bin 20 Jahre.

Correct: Ich bin 20 Jahre alt.

Age needs „alt“ at the end.
