Articles and nouns: der, die, das

Every German noun has a gender. Learn the articles and useful patterns for guessing them.

Three genders, one plural

German nouns are masculine („der Tisch“), feminine („die Lampe“) or neuter („das Buch“). In the plural, all genders use die: „die Tische, die Lampen, die Bücher“.

Nouns are always written with a capital letter. Learn every noun together with its article and its plural: „der Tisch, die Tische“.

  • Das ist ein Tisch. Der Tisch ist neu.

    That is a table. The table is new.

  • Hier ist eine Wohnung. Die Wohnung ist hell.

    Here is a flat. The flat is bright.

  • Das ist kein Buch, das ist ein Heft.

    That is not a book, it is a notebook.

  • Die Studenten sind im Kurs.

    The students are in the course.

Common mistakes

  • Wrong: Das ist nicht ein Buch.

    Correct: Das ist kein Buch.

    Use „kein“ to negate a noun with an indefinite article.

  • Wrong: Die Mädchen ist klein.

    Correct: Das Mädchen ist klein.

    Nouns ending in -chen are neuter.
