Connectors and word order

Connectors link your ideas — and each type changes the position of the verb differently. Learn the three patterns, then practise them in context.

Position 0 — word order does not change

These conjunctions stand before the clause and do not count as a position: subject and verb follow in normal order.

Ich bleibe zu Hause, denn ich bin krank.

Subordinate clause — verb at the end

The conjugated verb moves to the end of the clause. If the subordinate clause comes first, the main clause starts with its verb.

Connecting adverb — inversion

The adverb fills position 1, so the verb comes next and the subject follows it.

Ich bin krank. Deshalb bleibe ich zu Hause.

Two-part connectors

Both parts belong together. „je … desto“ has its own pattern: verb at the end after „je“, inversion after „desto“.
