PassiversatzformenAbout 25 min10 practice questions

In this lesson you will

  • Use „sein + zu + infinitive“ for what can or must be done
  • Use „sich lassen + infinitive“ for what can be done
  • Recognise adjectives in „-bar“ and „-lich“ with a passive meaning

Academic and administrative texts often say what can or must be done without saying who does it. Instead of a passive with a modal verb („Der Verlauf kann rekonstruiert werden“), they use shorter forms.

All forms below replace a passive with „können“ or „müssen“. Whether possibility or necessity is meant follows from the context.
