Masculine and neuter nouns usually add -s or -es in the genitive: „des Semesters“, „des Kurses“. Weak masculine nouns add -(e)n: „des Studenten“, „des Kollegen“.

Formal and written German uses the genitive after wegen, trotz, während, aufgrund, innerhalb, außerhalb, statt: „Aufgrund der hohen Nachfrage …“, „Während des Semesters …“. In everyday speech, „wegen“ and „trotz“ are often used with the dative, but write the genitive in exams.

Examples

  • Die Bewerbung muss innerhalb einer Woche eingereicht werden.

    The application must be submitted within one week.

  • Trotz des schlechten Wetters fand die Veranstaltung statt.

    Despite the bad weather, the event took place.

  • Die Ergebnisse der Studie wurden veröffentlicht.

    The results of the study were published.
